How Sarah Found Confidence Behind Her Frames

Sarah spent a decade avoiding photographs. One pair of frames changed how she saw herself in them.

Ten years of stepping out of the shot

Sarah had worn glasses since she was fourteen and had spent most of that time choosing frames she hoped nobody would notice. Thin, wire, neutral. The effect, she says, was that she stopped appearing in her own photographs.

A frame that was meant to be seen

The pair she left with was the opposite of everything she had bought before: a wide acetate frame in a warm amber that picked up her hair. It was the first time a fitting had started with what suited her rather than with what would disappear.

  • Book a fitting rather than shopping by picture
  • Try the frame you would normally rule out
  • Judge it on your face, not on the shelf
"I stopped choosing glasses I could hide behind and started choosing ones I liked looking at."

What she tells people now

Sarah's advice is to try the frame you would normally rule out on sight. It takes about a week to stop noticing a new pair on your own face, which is roughly a week less than most people give it before deciding it is not for them.
