Start with proportion, not trend

A frame works when it balances the face rather than competing with it. Measure the widest part of your face — usually the cheekbones — and look for a frame that is close to that width. Anything much narrower makes the face look wider; anything much broader swamps it.

Match the frame to the face

Round faces are flattered by angular frames that add definition; square faces soften behind rounded or oval shapes. Heart-shaped faces suit a lighter brow line and a wider base, and oval faces can wear almost anything, which is licence to choose on colour instead.

  • Measure across the cheekbones before you shop
  • Contrast the frame shape with the face shape
  • Let the brow line sit just below your own
"A frame should be the second thing people notice. The first should be you."

Colour is the part people get wrong

Warm complexions carry tortoiseshell, amber and gold; cool complexions carry black, grey and silver. If you are between the two, a translucent frame in a neutral tone will sit comfortably against either, and it will not date.
